Online Course Development

Putting your course online can be a bit intimidating, but don’t panic! UWW will help you translate your current pedagogical approach to an online environment. To begin, contact Phylise Banner in the UWW office at pbanner@skidmore.edu or (518) 580-5446.

The online course development process starts with a simple outline of your course content and syllabus – both of which can be done in a word processing package such as Microsoft Word.

Then we will help you develop the interface that best serves your content and approach to teaching. We will either design the online course technology directly with you, or train you in the tools and technology resources needed to create, edit and maintain an online course on your own.

In addition, we offer to do the following:

  • provide you with the necessary software and training (currently Dreamweaver MX) to create a Web course
  • put you in contact with the Skidmore librarian in your discipline who will help you find online resources to support your course
  • help you provide course support materials in the most usable or transferable formats
  • support edits and maintenance of the site throughout the duration of the course

We suggest that you take the UWW Summer Institute, which will introduce you to the technology resources available for use in your course development process. The Summer Institute also provides a group learning experience in which we discuss a variety of teaching and learning methods appropriate for online courses geared towards non-traditional students.

Even if you are fluent in Web development technologies, it is imperative that you work with the UWW office in order for us to properly offer and support our online courses. We will need to set up and test Web pages, server space and bulletin board settings at least one week before the course gets under way.

Due to the asynchronous environment of UWW online courses, please make your expectations for participation clear to the students early in the course and allow enough time for students to access assignments and exams.
