Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about technology at Skidmore College:
IT = Information Technology Department
The IT department facilitates and enhances the mission of the college, your education. We touch your life in many ways:
- manage the servers and databases that hold your records
- provide high tech classroom hardware, software, and support
- provide help desk support by phone, email, help ticket, and walkup
- install and support computers around campus for public use
- maintain wireless access points in all academic and administrative buildings
- deliver high speed network and Internet access around campus
- provide local telephone services; students provide their own long distance service
- maintain a media services lab with production support and equipment loans
- manage email services with virus scanning and spam filtering
Student Computers
The college provides both Windows and Macintosh computers for employees, classrooms, and public use. Some departments, such as studio art, use mostly Apple Macintosh. Others, such as math and computer science, use mostly Windows computers. Other departments use a mix with Windows computers being in the majority.
Students may bring either. We don't require a specific brand or model, but we have had good support and reliable products from Dell. Both Apple and Dell provide a discount for our students.
Regardless of the brand or model that you purchase, it needs to have an Ethernet connection to access our high speed network and Road Runner broadband in the residence halls. Wireless is optional but convenient in a notebook computer as you move around campus.
