Working within Skidmore Spam Quarantine

Executive Summary

You received an email message (sample) that suspected spam has been quarantined. This document explains:

Getting to Your Skidmore Spam Firewall Quarantine

There are three ways to get to your personal spam quarantine:

Starting in the email summary - For any single listed message, click an appropriate action such as Deliver, Whitelist, or Delete in the far right column.

Also in the email summary - Instead of picking an action, you may use click here at the bottom of the message.

You can also get to the quarantine via the Internet.

  1. Run your Web browser, preferably Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Apple Safari.
  2. Go to the address http://www.skidmore.edu/spam
  3. Log in. The "Log on to:" line must read "Skidmore." Use your network login password.

Reviewing Quarantined Items

There are four simple yet logical steps for reviewing the quarantine:

  1. Review the addresses.
Look for addresses that you know and trust. Perhaps something from the NY Times, a family member, or a colleague at another college was mistakenly quarantined. The spam firewall is very good but not perfect. It's important for you to review the quarantine now and then.
  2. Preview questionable messages without delivering.
Staying away from the Actions and checkbox columns, click any message to preview it. If the sender or subject are not clear spam clues, this allows you to peek at the message to see if it was good or bad. You don't have to "deliver" it to see it.
  3. Deliver or whitelist any desirable messages.
Use the links in the far right column. Deliver sends this one message to your inbox this one time. Whitelist marks the sender as always acceptable. Email from the whitelisted person at this address will not be stopped again.
  4. Delete the remaining undesirable spam.
The check box at the top of the column will select all remaining messages with one click. Then use the Delete button up above to permanently delete them. This is permanent. We cannot get them back. If you have lots and lots of spam saved up, you may have to do this multiple times to delete all screens. The check box and Delete button work on only one screen of messages at a time.
