Broadcasting happens when a user
inappropriately posts a message to many different newsgroups, most of which
have no relevance to the content of that posting.
Such broadcasts are considered
very disruptive because they typically trigger a flood of "get lost" messages
as thousands of readers worldwide complain about the posting.
Cantor & Siegel
In 1994, the law firm of Cantor
and Siegel perpetrated the most flagrant example of broadcasting when they
advertised their legal services to 6,000 different newsgroups without regard
to whether or not their services to secure immigration "green cards" might
be relevant to the content of those groups
Make Money Fast
The "Make Money Fast" posting
is a chain letter, first written in 1987, asking readers to send $5 to the
sender. From time to time, someone reposts this message to several newsgroups
hoping to lure foolish donations.
