Computer Recommendations and Information

General Information:

Skidmore's Computer Depot purchases all institutionally-owned computers exclusively from Apple and Dell. We have found that each of these manufacturers represent the best of quality and value in a diverse and competitive market. In addition, Apple and Dell offer students, faculty and staff educational discounts as part of their ongoing relationship with Skidmore.

All institutionally-purchased computers are ordered with built-in support for Skidmore's campus network. Furthermore, all models and configurations have been chosen to offer sufficient power and reliability for almost any campus application or situation. Student purchase recommendations, provide the student with relevant information as it pertains to specifications required for use on Skidmore's campus.

The following pages will act as a purchasing reference in the following instances:

  • Individuals approved for a computer through Skidmore's Computer Replacement Plan (Institutional Purchasing)
  • Individuals approved for a computer to be purchased via department or grant funding (Departmental Purchasing)
  • Faculty and staff seeking to make a personal purchase through their own personal funds (Personal/Retail Purchasing)
  • Students and parents requiring purchasing assistance for student-use computers to be used on or off campus (Student Purchasing)

Institutional Purchasing:

All institutional purchasing is now handled by the Computer Depot in conjunction with Skidmore College/IT computer replacement plan. Implemented in '01-'02, this plan addresses the college's technology needs on a consistent and continual basis. IT will contact each department scheduled for computer replacements, in January of each year with deployment planned for each spring/summer. The following pages are provided for informational purposes only, not for ordering. If you have specific questions about the institutional ordering process, please contact the Computer Depot (x5992).

Departmental Purchasing:

Although the majority of computer purchases fall within the parameters of institutional purchasing (see above), individual departments continue to order outside of the Central Computer Budget process. These departmental funds are generally used for unplanned computer requests, initiated by the addition of new faculty/staff and new grant approvals. Department funds are also regularly used in the purchasing of smaller, peripheral items such as scanners, digital cameras, and software packages. The following pages are provided for informational purposes only, not for ordering. A IT staff will review your computer request with you. Please contact the Computer Depot regarding all computer purchases (x5992).

Personal/Retail Purchasing:

Although the Computer Depot is not a retail computer store, the Depot does provide purchasing assistance to the Skidmore community whenever possible. Faculty and staff in the market for a computer and/or peripherals (printers, etc.), will order directly through each vendor.

To that extent, Skidmore offers an interest-free computer loan program to Skidmore employees, for the purpose of purchasing computers for personal use. If you are interested in this program, contact Margie Noel with Financial Services at
518-580-5826 for more information. You may also reference the following link for frequently asked questions, program guidelines, as well as to access a copy of the promissory note.

In addition to Apple and Dell, there are a variety of other vendors that offer educational discounts to all Skidmore affiliates. Specifically, the education sales division at SHI (800-527-6389) have shown an ability to offer great products at competitive prices. You are encouraged to compare prices, as there are a variety of vendors (both local retail and online), with some noticeable differences such as free overnight shipping with some online vendors. Contact the Computer Depot (x5992), regarding any questions that you may have.

Student Purchasing:

The Computer Depot is not a student retail computer store, however, the Depot does provide purchasing assistance to the Skidmore student community whenever possible. Students in the market for a computer and/or peripherals (printers, etc.), will order directly through each vendor. Apple and Dell student system configurations are available at the student recommendation page. These recommendations will provide you with a reasonable guide for purchasing a computer system that will meet your student's needs for his/her four years here at Skidmore.
