Critical First Steps:
If your Apple Macintosh is new and it has an Intel chipset, you must follow these steps exactly.
Download the program or have it nearby on a CD.
The download URL is http://www.skidmore.edu/it/vpn-login-only/savm_10_corp.dmg
You must be an administrator to install this software.
If your computer already has Symantec or Norton Antivirus older than version 9, you must manually uninstall it.
If you have any other antivirus program, you should uninstall it before proceeding.
Quit all software applications and save your work.
Installing Symantec Antivirus
1. Download the disk image file or find it on a CD.
If the program does not launch on its own, double-click the following icon. Otherwise, go to step 3.
2. This CD icon appears on your desktop. Ignore it.
3. A window opens with several icons. Double-click this Installer icon.
4. On the welcome screen, click the Continue button.
5. On the Important Information/Read Me screen, read the text if desired and then click Continue.
6. On the License Agreement screen, click the Continue button.
7. When the license terms pop up, click the Agree button.
8. On the Select a Destination screen, single-click your main hard disk, which is usually Macintosh HD.
9. Verify that you can proceed by comparing the free and required space.
10. If there is enough free space, click the Continue button.
11. For Installation Type, the default is Standard or Easy Install. That's fine. Click the Install button.
If an older version of Symantec Antivirus is installed, then ...
12. Type an administrator's username and password.
13. Click the OK button.
14. At the warning about closing applications, click the Continue Installation button.
15. An install screen shows the progress. The optimization stage can take a few minutes.
16. If the following error appears, ignore it and click the OK button.
17. At the final screen, click the Logout button. Be sure to read the next step before proceeding.
18. If offered, do not log in. Shut Down.
If necessary, open the Apple menu to find Shut Down.
19. Turn the computer on.
20. Log in. Do not stop here. You must continue with the following patch installations.
Update the Virus Definitions and Program with LiveUpdate.
1. At the Finder screen after logging back in, the error may reappear. If so, click the OK button.
2. Open the Go menu.
3. Choose Applications.
3. Find the Symantec Solutions folder and double-click to open the folder.
4. Double-click the LiveUpdate icon to launch the LiveUpdate program.
5. In LiveUpdate, choose Update Everything Now.
6. The summary window should show that an update to 10.1 was downloaded.
7. Click the OK button. Do not click the Quit button at this time.
8. Again, choose Update Everything Now in the LiveUpdate window. You must update this second time.
9. The summary should indicate that you were updated to 10.1.1 or newer.
10. Click the Quit button.
11. Close the Symantec Solutions folder.
12. In the Apple menu, choose Restart.
13. After restarting, drag the savm_10_corp icon to the Trash.

It's possible that you will not have a place to control preferences for Symantec Antivirus 10.x after installation. This is relevant, for example, if you want to stop SAV from scanning an iPod every time you connect it.
